Garage Door Repair and Replacement

Make sure to only remove and replace one hinge or roller at a time as the other holds it in place and removing both will cause the door to collapse. Use a hammer or rubber mallet to gently bend the track back into place after you've replaced the rollers.

Tracks that have become damaged can lead to a wide range of issues, including a garage door that won’t open or close properly. Depending on how bad the damage is, you may need to replace the tracks entirely.

Over time, tracks can warp due to a variety of factors, including weather conditions and improper installation. Keeping an eye out for this can help you find and fix the problem quickly before it becomes worse. If the tracks appear to be bent, you can loosen the bolts that hold them in place and gently tap them back into a vertical position using a pair of pliers. Eventually, you can tighten the bolts back in place to secure them. This can prevent the tracks from becoming damaged and prevent them from coming off track.

Many garage door systems utilize one or more cables to lift and lower the doors. Typically these cables wind around a drum attached to the torsion spring or on a pulley system located on the frame of the door. Over time and use the cables can fray and break.

To replace a cable it is important to note that the new replacement must match the old in length, diameter and wire gauge. It is also recommended to visually inspect the entire system for slack, kinks and rust on the cable and on the pulleys.

To remove the old cable start by opening the door as far as it will go. Using a ladder and locking pliers, clamp the track on both sides where the cable ends at the bottom. Locate the end of the cable that is resting in the notch on the drum and unwind it.

While most homeowners can handle minor garage door maintenance, working with high-tension springs is best left to professionals. The door system handles a lot of weight and tension, so any mistake can lead to disaster or injury.

One of the most obvious signs of a broken spring is a loud bang when you open or close the door. The jarring sound is caused by the release of an enormous amount of energy that unwinds the coils in under a second.

The other clear sign of a broken spring is seeing a gap or stretched-out appearance in the spring. These springs store energy to lift the door, and if they break, the released tension will be directed at whatever it hits – usually a wall or storage rack.
